The concept is simple:

We offer several programs and gatherings, each of which is designed to bring people both with and without intellectual/developmental disabilities together, to build friendships. People with I/DD often travel through life in a separate lane. We think life is better when we’re together.

Our Core Values

Mutuality

Our relationships are based on sharing a common humanity, therefore we all lead and help and serve one another - not above and below, but side by side.

Beauty

Too often, the world assumes that people with disabilities are fine with whatever. We want to foster a culture and create programs filled with beauty.

Hospitality

The substance of friendship is our gathering together as equals. The spirit of hospitality is simply this: “Welcome. I am glad that you are here.”

Discovery

When we give people the time and attention they deserve, we discover more about one another, ourselves, God, and the world around us.

What We Believe

Side by Side is directed by the belief that everyone was created by God and in God’s image. Jesus is the perfect expression of God’s character, which is to say that God is Love. To us, that means that each person was made for love and for community. A person with I/DD isn’t a mistake or an error; each person uniquely reflects God’s image.

God has given everyone unique gifts to share with the world. Each person also has unique vulnerabilities and struggles.

As you can tell from this, Side by Side is a faith-based organization. SBS programs may include some spiritual content. That said, we are welcoming of everyone no matter your own personal beliefs. All are welcome here!

Inspiration

Our sister community Reality Ministries in Durham, NC is a major part of our story. David, SBS’s Executive Director and one of our founders, worked as Reality’s Director of Community Development for eight years.
